Most of the wrestling world, outside of the Island aren’t aware of how important this event is to IWA fans, IWA wrestlers, and especially Miguelito Perez (Miguel Jr.). Miguel Perez Sr. was and still is a very honored man in Puerto Rico sports history!
He was one of the first, if not the first, Luchador from the Island to achieve international stardom!!
If I were to use a comparison, I would say that Miguel Sr. was to wrestling what Roberto Clemente was to baseball in Puerto Rico!

I have done quite “a bit of business” in Puerto Rico. Let me tell you, there are many cultural differences and as friendly as I have been with “born and bred” Puerto Ricans, I’m sure there will always be some trust issues and that is due to many reasons that have nothing to do with me or my friends and associates on the Island.
I can’t remember which time it was when I went there to work but, it was around the Miguel Perez Cup event. Miguelito was in the IWA office carrying something wrapped in a fine cloth.
I love Miguelito! But, anyone that knows him will attest to his “somewhat” oddness. Especially toward gringos!
I can sometimes still be like a curious child.
After seeing him walk in and out 4 times, carrying the item, I NEEDED to know what he had!!

Say what you want, call me a pu$$y but what Miguelito had wrapped in that cloth was one of the coolest pieces of wrestling history I have ever seen! Scratch that!! One of the coolest things I have ever seen!!!….
It was the genuine, real gold, WWWF (WWE), tag team title belt that Vince McMahon Sr. gave to Miguel Sr. from back in the day!!!
Like I said, it was fucking beautiful!! It was made of real gold and not only had Miguel Sr. and his partner Antonio Rocca’s name inscribed on it, but also there images as well! The belt was really more like a piece of art!!
Can you imagine?? How important Perez and Rocca must have been to Vince Sr.?? Those guys knew how to do this!
Back, to Miguel’s “oddness” (especially toward gringos lol!) when I saw this belt, I literally got “goose bumps” and at first I don’t think Miguel believed how sincere I was in my reaction. And I’ll tell you, I couldn’t contain myself and not many things “POP” me so you can imagine!!

I know in the states, the indy’s have hammered the concept of a 2 ring battle royal. Well in P.R. even WWC (which is Carlos Colon and also IWA competition) has enough respect for Miguel Sr. to not use the concept (that I’m aware of anyway).
To set the stage a bit more, the event is a 2 ring battle royal, done “rumble style”. The events other purpose is to set the stage for many of the angles and storylines that, when business was good may last a year or longer!!
Here are the results from the 2009 Miguel Sr. Cup:
The last five finalists were Noel Rodriguez (the son of Victor the bodyguard), Lynx, Dennis Rivera (the “estranged” brother of Savio), Mr. Big and Bacano.
Mr. Big and Noel eliminated each other. The next to go was Bacano when he was double super kicked, un intentionally, by Dennis and Lynx, who were NOT working together!
Somehow the finish of the match came when Lynx thought Dennis was eliminated. And when his back was turned, he was eliminated by surprise by Dennis.
Upon winning the match, Dennis Rivera put himself first in-line and number 1 contender for the undisputed, unified, IWA world championship title!!
Dennis was presented the cup by the Mayor of Catano Honorable Jose Rosario (who HATES lucha libre!! I don’t know how IWA pulled that off!) and the LOVELY widow of Mr. Perez senior.
In the IWA World title match
current champion Joe Bravo beat Miguel Perez with interference coming from The Revolution (Dominican heel faction)
For the Intercontinental Championship Title:
Rick Stanley beat Diabolico
And in the IWA World Tag team tournament:
Golden Boy and Steve Powers (Powers who was subbing for Chris Joel) defeated Hardam Kadafi and Zaeir “The Arabs”.
In the IWA Women’s World Championship fans saw:
Ramone defeated Barbie Boy
W/help from Jay Adonis
Then:
Mr. Big beat Noel Rodriguez, when Noel was DQ’D due to outside interference from Rick Stanley
In other IWA tag team competition fans saw:
Niche & Lynx beat Vertigo and Cold
EXTREME COMBAT DIVISION
TRIPLE THREAT
Syco beat Gilbert and Cuervo
