Fishing report: 6 lb Largemouth Bass caught in Mchenry Co.

Folks, this time it was my friend Randy who caught the “big un”. For “shits and giggles” we figured we’d go ahead and try Hickory Nut Grove.
Its a Mchenry County DOC park and if you go, be sure to have your license because the conservation police are out there ALWAYS and looking to generate revenue!!

Now the lake is about a 100 yard channel drudged out 30+ years ago from the Fox River. It feeds a small lake like maybe 15 acres. The body of water is dependent on whether or not they have the Mchenry dam open.

The lake has TONS of weeds and cover! When the water is down, its almost unfishable with the exception of a few holes.

Ok, we went about 6pm and there were no other fishermen there. We figured the water would be up a bit from last weeks storms hopefully giving us a foot or so above the weeds.

The water was high but, not as high as we’d hoped for. We were going to at least try this spot and if it sucked we’d finish the night over on the north side of Bangs lake from shore.

Well, Randy tied on a plastic surface lure that kind floats with a quicker retrieve and at about the second cast………..BAM!!!

Where he pulled this fish from was such heavy cover, there aren’t many lures that I think you could even pull through the vegetation. I know that Randy didn’t have a lot of faith in the lake either because he tied this plastic lure onto his medium action rod with 8 lb monofilament line.

This fish hit like a Mack truck! It was a “hell of a thing” watching Randy fight this “hoss” through all the weeds on the surface and below!

He must have said 5 times “there’s no way I’m getting this guy out of all this and through the lily pads”! Well, sure as shit he did!!

I’d get out there before the water is down but, we caught 3 more bass and a northern pike in about an hour and a half.

Word to the wise, get outta there at sunset or the DOC will break your balls!

Good luck!!
